Goldilocks And The Three Bears, James Marshall, Puffin Books. In my opinion, if a child has never read this book or is an ELL student, they might not like it due to the illustrations. Playskool Goldilocks Three Bears Story Book Stuffed Bear Toy 11' Soft Cuddly Cloth Vintage 1973. From the perspective of a young reader, they might enjoy the book because of the classic story that goes along with it. exactly as she pleases - even if that means sampling the three bears porridge, breaking Baby Bears chair, and sleeping in his bed. Also, this book has been done so many other times before and does not compare well. Readers can see the mischief in the expressions on Goldilock's face and the growing irritation on the bears' faces when they return to find their house in disarray. After reviewing this book, I have come to the conclusion that I would only give this book 2/2 stars because I thought that the book was not illustrated well and seemed cheesy. James Marshall's pictures are delightful, and add depth to the lively text. Throughout the book, the author explains that Goldilocks actions were not all okay and that taking what is not yours is not okay. After she was done eating, Goldilocks became tired and decided she would head up stairs to test out the beds to see which one she would feel most comfortable in. Whether shared in a lap or with a group, this one's a winner. Marshall is careful to include basic motifs from the original tale: the bowls of porridge, the chairs, and the beds, but he takes liberties in his commentary: ``She walked right in without even bothering to knock'' and in the characters' exclamations, like ``Patooie!'' and ``Egads!'' His playful watercolor illustrations fill the pages in their comic portrayal of these well-known figures. While the basic storyline may be recognizable to young listeners, sight gags and ironic wit are whimsically employed for those who already know the tale and/or Marshall's other works (for example, a white hen perches atop the bears' house). This retelling is a Victorianesque version of a chubby, blond-hair strong-willed ``naughty little girl'' who takes a shortcut through the woods on her way to buy muffins in the next village, and invades the home of the three sophisticated bears. PreSchool-Grade 2 Another delightful romp through the fairy tale forest from the author of Red Riding Hood (Dial, 1987) and James Marshall's Mother Goose (Farrar, 1986). James Marshalls offbeat and inventive telling of this familiar tale will enchant readers. He was best known for his series on the mischievous exploits of Fox, a debonair, lazy showoff the uproarious adventures of the two Cut-Ups, Spud and Joe George and Martha and the misadventures of the Stupidfamily. He divided his time between an apartment in the Chelsea district of New York and his home in Mansfield Hollow Connecticut. James Marshall was one of the most prolific and successful author/illustrators of children's books.
